On further troubleshooting, I was able to duplicate the problem while programming the chip with a 32kHz watch crystal installed on the T1OSO/PGC and T1OSI/PGD lines. Tried using PicKit2 App in Windows to restore operation with the "program first time using VDD" which led to a successful write operation there. haven't been able to complete programming successfully in MPLAB thereafter. then accidentally had the MCLR line jumped to the RA4 line on the PDP2 board during a programing operation which lead to a programming target failure. I've been working with MPLABX for several weeks setup with a 16F88 on a breadboard and jumped to a PicKit2 + PicDemPlus2 for programming.
